Apartment living makes you pay attention to your use of space, but it doesn’t have to stop you from getting an awesome treadmill workout at home.

When you’re shopping for the perfect treadmill for your apartment, there are some important things to keep in mind.

Quality – While they may cost you more than the big box version from your local Walmart, a quality treadmill is well worth the investment. It will last much longer and provide you with better warranty services. Plus, the treadmills we recommend provide a higher value workout.

Folding – A model with folding capability will allow you store your treadmill out of sight when you aren’t using it. This allows you to maximize the use of your space.

Quietness – Apartment living means neighbors… neighbors that can hear almost everything! A quiet treadmill will get you a great workout without disturbing those around you.

Stability – Make sure your treadmill has a solid foundation that will keep it from moving on the floor. This way you can be sure that each running step you take is not going to rattle your machine to pieces. This also help keep the noise level to a minimum.

What About a Cheap Compact Model?

There are cheap compact treadmill brands available, but don’t be tempted by the low price tag! You want your treadmill to be a worthwhile investment and with a cheaper compact brand, you often get what you pay for. We rarely recommend a treadmill that costs less than $599.

Some problems you may run across with a cheap, compact treadmill include:

Small motor – You don’t want a treadmill that can’t keep up with you over time or distance. That defeats the purpose.

Poor Shock Resistance – Don’t increase your risk of injury by putting stress and strain on your body that can be avoided with a higher quality machine.

Less Stability – Not only can this be unsafe, but each running step you take is going to rattle your cheap machine until it falls apart.

Low Durability – You want a machine that can withstand use. It does no one any good if it has a 90 day warranty and falls apart on day 91! Look for a machine with a much longer warranty that shows the company has faith in the construction of their equipment.

Small running surface – Compact models have a smaller deck to reduce weight and size. This can be a big problem if you are a tall person with a long running stride.

Why Smaller Decks May Not Work For You

The smaller deck on a compact treadmill means a shorter running surface, which can cause problems for tall people, or anyone with a longer stride. You certainly don’t want to be falling off the back of your machine when trying to get in your workout.

Also, remember that some treadmills are made for walking while others are specifically designed for running. When you’re choosing your treadmill make sure to think about the person using it, and what they are using it for.

Instead…invest in a quality brand with folding capability!

Having the ability to fold up your treadmill when you aren’t using it can make a world of difference when you have limited space. You can get the quality and features you want without sacrificing square footage! Many models also use a hydraulic folding system which makes folding and unfolding your treadmill a breeze.
