Matrix Fitness Treadmill Reviews

Matrix treadmills come from parent company Johnson Fitness located in Madison, Wisconsin.  Our team members recently visited their company headquarters and to say we were ‘impressed’ is a bit of an understatement.

Johnson Fitness is the third largest fitness equipment manufacturer in the world.  They also produce Vision Fitness and Horizon Fitness treadmills and ellipticals.  The company is well known for their excellent customer service, low maintenance machines, and quality products.

What Sets Johnson Fitness and Matrix Apart from the Competition?

Vertical Integration – All of the individual components that go into the Matrix machines are manufactured by Johnson Fitness. This means the pieces are built to work perfectly with each other.  In comparison, many competing brands source their components from third-party companies resulting in maintenance issues or parts that wear faster than they should.

Johnson Drive System on Matrix and Horizon Treadmills

For the Matrix motors, the benefit of this vertical integration is quite clear.  The Johnson Drive System motor runs at a lower RPM than competition brands resulting in a quieter motor that stays cooler.  They also have a completely maintenance free tread-belt that has been tested up to 20,000 miles.

Awesome Customer Service – While we were receiving our tour of the Johnson Fitness facilities, we were shown to a call center where rows of friendly customer service reps were taking calls. Johnson has a strong commitment to excellent customer service that is not always present with other competition brands.

Integrity – Finally, we were impressed by the overall integrity of the Johnson Fitness family. It is obvious that the company cares for their employees as shown by the employee gyms, locker rooms, yoga classes on the lawn, and bright offices.  A company that cares about its employees cares about its customers.

Matrix Folding TF30 Treadmill Review

The TF30 treadmill from Matrix is normally priced around $2,999. Some of the best features on this treadmill include:

Matrix TF30 Treadmill ReviewFolding Design – This machine folds up to almost a 90-degree angle. When we visited the Johnson factory, we were amazed at how easy it was to raise the decks of their folding treadmills.  A much necessary safety mechanism prevents the deck from slamming down when released.  Folding machines are great for saving space and easier cleaning.

3.25 HP Continuous Duty Johnson Drive System – Motors from Johnson Fitness are unique in that they are extremely quiet, durable, and responsive.  They use larger than normal magnets so that the motors can run at lower RPMs, stay cool, and stay quiet.  The motor control board (MCB) and motor were designed to work together so they operate smoothly and reliably.  This is in sharp contrast to other companies where the drive system parts are sourced from different manufacturers.

Johnson motors work more efficiently so the higher horsepower is unnecessary.  It literally recalibrates with every single footfall so you will enjoy a smooth and natural feel while you run. You will appreciate the quietness of this machine during those early morning runs when the rest of your family is sleeping.

20×55″ Deck Size – This deck length will work well for many runners who want a space-saving folding design.  However, individuals over 6 ft. in height or those with longer running strides would be better off buying the 60″ width found on the Matrix TF50.

Industrial Grade Cushioning – The Matrix TF30 has a heavy-duty frame, extra-thick deck and industrial grade cushions to protect your joints while you run.  A series of rubber elastomers like those used on train car bumpers provide support and durability.

0-12% Incline – This provides a decent range of incline to help you target different muscle groups in your legs.  Varying the incline provides a more effective workout.

0.5-12.5 MPH Speeds – Change your speed from a casual jog to an all-out sprint to challenge your body and build endurance.

350 lb. Weight Capacity – Individuals over this weight limit will want to consider one of the other Matrix models.

Warranty – Lifetime frame, motor and cushioning, 5 years parts, 2 years labor.  This is a great warranty which shows that they have confidence in their machine.

iFit Enabled – iFit is an interactive fitness technology designed to keep you motivated, accountable, and entertained on your journey to fitness and health. The TF30 treadmill comes with a 30-day membership trial to iFit. After the trial expires, it’s a monthly fee of $39. To learn more about iFit, read a more in-depth review here.

Choice of 3 Different Consoles – The Matrix machines come with a choice of three consoles so you can choose the one that matches your goals and budget.  We love this flexibility because it allows buyers to customize their machine with the exact features that will make the most of their workouts.  There are several unique features available on all of the consoles:

XIR – The top console model is the Matrix TF30-XIR regularly priced at $4,399.  This 16″ HD touchscreen comes with 13 workout programs, Bluetooth capability, built in speakers, USB port, and an easy-to-use screen with console apps displayed like on a smart device.  These apps include YouTube, Netflix, Twitter, Facebook, Hulu, a web browser and more.

XER – The middle of the line console comes with the Matrix TF30-XER for $3,799.  This 10″ class touchscreen comes with 12 workout programs, Bluetooth and Wifi capability, built in speakers, USB port, and all console apps.

XR – The simplest (and most budget friendly) console comes with the Matrix TF30-XR for around $2,999.  This console features an 8.5″ extra wide blue back-lit LCD screen, 5 workout programs and all of the basic stats that you would want on a treadmill screen with no frills.

Matrix Folding TF50 Treadmill Review

The Matrix TF50 is their top folding treadmill model with several improvements over the Matrix TF30 machine.  It has a spacious 20×60” running service, a thicker belt and soft-touch buttons for quick incline and speed control.  Best of all, it folds up nearly in half for easy storage and cleaning. Some other notable features include:

20×60” Running Surface – There are a few features that distinguish the Matrix TF50 from the smaller Matrix TF30 and the most important is the size of the running service.  This longer 60” deck will work better for individuals over six feet or those with long running strides.

Matrix TF50 Treadmill ReviewFolding Design – A folding treadmill is a great option for people who live in smaller homes.  After your workout, it can easily be folded up and rolled out of the way.  We were impressed with how high the deck folds up… nearly to a 90-degree angle.

3.25 HP Continuous Duty Johnson Drive System – Motors from Johnson Fitness have all of their components built in-house so you can avoid maintenance issues that arise when ill-fitted parts are forced together (this is common with other brands).  Instead, you are left with a quiet and efficient motor that runs at a lower RPM than the competition.  The motor is designed to re-calibrate hundreds of times per second so you will experience a smooth run without lags or surges.  Plus, you will enjoy peace of mind because the motor comes with a lifetime warranty.

Industrial Grade Cushioning – The Matrix TF50 has an extra-thick deck, heavy duty frame and industrial grade cushioning.  Rubber elastomers, similar to those used on train car bumpers, provide support and durability while you run.

0-12% Incline – Target your glute muscles by increasing the incline on your treadmill for a butt-busting workout!  This is a nice range for treadmill incline.

0.5-12.5 MPH Speeds – Vary your speed to challenge your body.  Interval training has been scientifically proven to build muscle and lower body fat.

30 Day iFit Free Trial – With a 30-day free access pass to the interactive fitness technology iFit, you’ll be able to take your workouts to the next level. Take advantage of perks like scenic workouts, world class trainer access, interactive coaching, community leaderboards, live and on-demand classes, and more. After the free trial, there is a monthly fee of $39.

400 lb. Weight Capacity – This machine will accommodate many users.

Warranty – Lifetime frame, motor and cushioning, 7 years parts, 2 years labor.

Console Options – There are four different consoles on the TF50.

XUR – Priced at $5,899, this console is for users who want the ultimate experience on their new Matrix TF50 treadmill.  It comes with a monster 22” touchscreen, 13 workout programs, Wifi and Bluetooth connectivity, and a HDMI port. The apps display similarly to a smart device so you can select between any compatible app such as YouTube, Netflix, Facebook, Hulu, Web Browser, and more.

XIR – Regularly selling for around $5,299, the XIR features a 16” HD touchscreen display.  The console also includes 13 workout programs, Bluetooth connectivity, built in speakers, a USB port and console apps.  The console apps display as if they were on a typical smart device just like with the XUR console.

XER – Take your console down one notch with the TF50-XER for around $4,699.  The touchscreen display on this console is only 10” and it includes one less workout program for $500 in savings.  You will still enjoy all of the other benefits of the top console model.

XR – If you like the look of the Matrix TF50 but know that you are not going to use the tech features, you may be happy with this basic display option.  The XR console sells for $3,899 and features an 8.5” extra wide blue back-lit LCD display, 5 workout programs and all of the other basic stats you would expect.  No frills with a lower price-tag.

Matrix Non-Folding T30 Treadmill Review

The non-folding T30 treadmill is pretty identical to the TF30 folding treadmill model, except that it doesn’t offer the folding capability and the motor is .25 HP less. Most users will not notice much of a difference in the motor size, as 3.0 HP is still more than sufficient for residential use.

If you want all the features available on the TF30 but you don’t want or need a folding treadmill, the T30 will be a great option for you. The best features on the T30 non-folding treadmill include:

  • 3 HP Continuous Duty Motor (.25 less than the TF30 model)
  • 20×55″ Deck Size
  • Industrial Grade Cushioning
  • 0-12% Incline
  • 5-12.5 MPH Speeds
  • 350 lb. Weight Capacity
  • Lifetime frame, motor and cushioning, 5 years parts, 2 years labor warranty
  • iFit Enabled with 30-day membership included
  • 3 Console Options, XR, XER, XIR

It should be noted that the most basic console option (XR) price on the T30 treadmill from Matrix will still cost you $2,799. The same console option on the TF30 treadmill is $2,999. For only $200 more, you may want to consider upgrading to get the folding feature and a slightly stronger horsepower motor.

Matrix Non-Folding T50 Treadmill Review

With the T50 and the TF50 treadmills, we run into the same scenario as above with the T30 and the TF30. The T50 and the TF50 are exactly the same, even down to the motor size. The only difference between them is that the TF50 has the ability to fold up, and the T50 does not. The price difference between them for the basic XR console is only $100 bucks. So, for that cheap of a price difference, we think it’s worth it to upgrade to the TF50 and get the option to fold it away. Even if you think you won’t be folding it up often, it’s nice to have the option if it’s ever needed.

Matrix Non-Folding T75 Treadmill Review

The Non-Folding T75 Matrix treadmill machine, and to be honest we can’t figure out why. The most basic console option starts this machine out with a $4,699 price tag. However, when you look at the specs, the T50 actually out performs it in almost every feature aspect. The only difference is that the T75 has an extra 2” in width on the running deck area. For a price difference of almost $1,000, we really can’t justify upgrading to the T75 treadmill.

Are Matrix Treadmills a Good Choice?

Because they are manufactured by Johnson Fitness, Matrix Fitness treadmills are a really solid option. They are well-constructed, durable, backed with fantastic warranties, and have motors that are built-to-last. The major drawback when it comes to these machines are the expensive price tags. For the specs, most of the price points are not justifiable. Now maybe you’re thinking, so what’s my alternative?

If you’re looking for another option to Matrix Fitness treadmills, we suggest considering NordicTrack

Why?

NordicTrack has been a reputable brand in the fitness industry year after year. Their treadmills are manufactured by ICON Fitness, who also makes several other treadmill brands including the popular brand ProForm. NordicTrack machines are constructed with high-quality components, and have the technological capabilities that Matrix offers on their machines. NordicTrack treadmills are known for their larger screens, and the access to iFit technology. The best part is that NordicTrack offers all of the same features that Matrix does for a fraction of the price. You don’t have to pay an upgraded price for bigger screens or technological features.
