Although the ProForm CrossWalk 500 comes with a nice array of features, there are two aspects that bug me. First, I do not like the workout handlebars. This is a treadmill not an elliptical trainer. The design of an elliptical is conducive to both a lower and upper body workout - a treadmill is not.
When you walk on a treadmill, you should be in the center of the belt. In order to use the handlebars on the CrossWalk 500 you have to be leaning forward, almost on top of the console.
The other aspect that bothers me is the limited 90-day parts and labor warranty (The motor is covered for 10-years). I realize that ProForm wants to upsell you on a longer warranty, but for $999 you should get at least 1-year parts and labor. So don't consider this a $999 treadmill. When you factor in the extra warranty coverage, you actually are paying $1,099.
What I do like about the ProForm CrossWalk 500...
2.75" Continuous Duty Motor - This motor is adequate for both walkers and joggers. It should run smoothly and quietly at higher speeds and speed inclines.
10 Workout Programs - A nice selection that allows you to change up your workout and overcome the monotony of walking in place.
Interactive Audio CrossTrainer - I have not actually tried this feature, but it sounds interesting. According to the ProForm site
"An interactive fitness coach that audibly and visually prompts you to perform a variety of strength-training exercises throughout your cardio workout allowing you to burn calories, while building and maintaining muscle mass."
It sounds like their iFit technology without having to pay extra for the workout cards.
Our Review - ProForm CrossWalk 500
When selling for $599 or less the ProForm CrossWalk 500 is a consideration. However, realize this is a budget treadmill and not built for extensive use. Also, the 350 lbs. user weight limit is absurd. I would place it at around 220 lbs.
If you are looking for a durable treadmill that can accommodate both walking and jogging upgrade to at least a $1,000 model. If your budget is limited and you are not sure of your commitment to regular exercise, the cost of the machine minimizes the financial risk.
Note: With the 90-day parts and labor warranty you will want to upgrade to 1 or 2 year coverage.
If you want to get an upper body workout, buy an elliptical trainer. You can check out my elliptical reviews at my Elliptical Trainer Review site.
